A History That We Chinese Should Remember

Does anybody still recall about the Indonesia Riot during 1998

In chinese is < 98' 事件 >

If you were in my age

You won't really recall what has really happen back then

But I want to share this post to everyone because it's something and it's a history that we chinese should remember

I spent a little time writing this paragraph and searching for details and pictures

Hope everyone slowly read thru this post with patience

Pictures will maybe make you guys discomfort

Please don't read if you have weak heart

...................................

...............

In 1997 and 1998 there were riots in various parts of Indonesia

The riots were triggered by economic problems like food shortages and mass unemployment in Indonesia

Some of the riots were aimed against the Chinese-Indonesians

Some riots looked spontaneous and some looked as if they had been planned

The first five weeks of 1998 there were over two dozen of demonstrations

Price riots, bomb threats, and bombings were all around the island

At the start of May 1998

Students were holding a peaceful demonstrations on university campuses across the country

They were protesting against massive price rises for fuel and energy besides that they were demanding that President Suharto should step down

During May 12, students at Jakarta's Trisakti University planned to march to the parliament and present the government with their demands

The police prevented the students from marching

Few uniformed men on motorcycles appeared on the flyover and shots rang out

Four students were killed

A peaceful demonstration became into a bloody scene

The riots became more widespread on 14-15 May 1998

Rioting across Jakarta destroyed many commercial centres in Jakarta and over 1,000 died

Ethnic Chinese (Chinese - Indonesian) were targeted

Properties and businesses owned by ethnic chinese was seriously targeted in this incident

The riots were allegedly instigated by Indonesian military members who were out of uniform

Homes were attacked and women were raped by gangs of men who wore ordinary clothing

Shops and buildings owned by ethnic chinese were either destroyed or burned down

According to the news

Up to 3-5% of chinese population in indonesia fled because of this incident

Over 1,000 and as many as 5,000 people died during these riots in Jakarta and other cities

Many victims died in burning malls and supermarkets but some were shot or beaten to death

2,479 shop-houses, 1,026 ordinary houses, 1,604 shops, 383 private offices, 65 bank offices, 45 workshops, 40 shopping malls, 13 markets, and 12 hotels were destroyed or damaged in this incident

Can anybody tell me what's happening to the world now?

Can anybody tell me does justice still exists?

What did we chinese do wrong?

What that we chinese did which make you indonesians so eager to kill us alive?

Not only this Anti - Chinese Riot in Indonesia

Many incidents, bombings and roits are happening all around the world

Global warming ! Terrorists ! Fights ! Democracies ! AND SO MUCH MORE !

When can peace really exist in our life

What will happen to our future?

Will even worst things happen?

If this continue, i rather won't get married and won't give birth to any kids

Because this world is a disaster

I won't let my child suffer in this kind of place

p/s : Maybe this post will make some of you feeling uncomfortable or nausea, but please bear with it because the world is really changing.

So, my friends told me not to donate money to
Indonesia as they are having their punishment now.

  7. I remember this tragic incident well. I am revisiting articles on it because there's this warped guy on YouTube who's bragging about how they raped and killed Chinese women. They targeted the ethnic Chinese which only accounts for 3% of population but 70% of Indonesia's wealth because Chinese are the commercial drivers. It was plain jealousy. You can see similar behaviour in Malaysia.

Theres no justice--sadly will never be. I continually say Indonesian Malays are the most dangerous people in this world. The Bali bombings, Australian Embassy bombings and hotel bombings in Jakarta should remind how violent these people can be.

  8. I am very disturbed by this episode in human history...especially against the ethnic chinese. My heart goes to them...I'll always remember the suffering of the chinese suffered this riot. As a Chinese myself, i feel their hurt and anger. Weirdly, why has this never been brought up again to slap Indonesia? China as an emerging power should rally and do some for Chinese regardless of nationality. There's a saying 'As long as there's sunlight beaming, you will find a Chinese'. Readers should google some professional readings on this riot and the sufferings the Chinese undergone...personally, good thing the Indons did not prosper...and they will not for many years to come.

  9. I have asked some Indonesians about these riots, and they admitted that about 50% or even the majority supported this anti-Chinese pogrom, although they didn't support it themselves.

This is the typical fascist mob mentality which is prevalent among much of the Indonesian population. Before, the Chinese were made as a scapegoats for all the Indonesians' problems and failures. Now these same fascist Indonesians found a new scapegoat: the Malaysians.

Malaysia is often being accused by them of "stealing" their culture, so not few Indonesians indeed call for war and even genocide against the Malaysians!

I have witnessed this depraved mentality myself on Youtube.
Here are some users who defended the rape and slaughter against the Chinese in the Jakarta riots:
    http://www.youtube.com/user/PribumiPrincesa
    http://www.youtube.com/user/MrsMuj4h1d

If there were a large Malaysian community in Indonesia too, they would have probably suffered the same fate due to this mass-hysteria. There were reports already of established checkpoints on Jakarta's main roads by nationalist groups to "capture Malaysian citizens".

  15. I remember, I was 8 at that time..
My dad and brother were outside our apartment block area, guarding and would tell us if those mean people come. Mom and me were inside, locking everything. Clothes, money, any important things were packed inside our car, ready to flee if anything happens. At that time, I didn't understand why mom was looking anxiously on the front door all day long. I remember asking, and my mom told me not to worry, and she was just waiting for dad. Then around noon, the neighbors would often sounded the alarm and told us to get ready to flee.

Years after that, I learned the truth. My parents never said anything. When I thought back to that moment, I could feel my mom must have been so scared protecting me.. just terrible..Lucky nothing happened to me and family...

Natural disasters are good for Indonesia. Let them suffer! Funny facts.. of many disasters happened in Indonesia, not even one hit me or any of my families, and I hope other Chinese Indonesians too. Let only native Indonesians suffer! Let them suffer!

  18. To Anonymous,

ISLAM did not teach their people to kill each other..in some parts of the world, Chinese who practices Buddhist, people who practices Christians also do cruelty things like this especially you can see the incident happend in Gaza, Jewish killing the Muslim.

It is not religion that suppose to be blame, all religion in the world do not teach their people to kill each other. What occur this is actually the mentality that shaped their mind to do cruelty to others.

People who blaming other's religion also can shape other's people mind to act & behave such this. They create hatred among each other and believe that their own religion is the greatest and other's religion should be destroyed.

As a civilised people, we should learn on how to live peacefully among multi racial culture. We have to accept that we are no longer live in a world that owns by our religion & ethnicity. Human are developing as we can find many people in different background of culture and religion.

  19. always i hear "ISLAM did not teach their people to kill each other....", yes we might be wrong but why i never heard others talk about other religion? There must be a reason for that 空穴来风啊。。。。

  21. I am a Singaporean Chinese working in Indonesia for a couple of months now. I understand the fear of the Chinese community and its hard not to feel for them. Even now, being a minority Chinese here means you have to respect the locals even more.

I seen some comments on other websites asking why the Chinese men did not stand up against the mob. being a minority and seeing how small the community is, its virtually impossible. Courage, will to live and strength is the only security at that time.

I pray for the departed souls, the souls that were hurt and those that caused hurt in these situation.

In my time here, I have met numerous locals that have shown me warmth and love as being one of them, and I would always show them the same in return.

this has only taught me never to take stability, racial harmony and peace for granted. it comes at a price. though we might not understand the price as it was establish throughout the years, it would always remain as a thin fabric that could go either way.

Thanks to my friends across the causeway for posting such an informative article.

    Peace be with you.

  22. MONSTERS! Those people are monsters! These primitive Islams better wake up soon or else somebody ought to start banning it from civilized countries! This didn't get alot of coverage worldwide back in 1998. The world has to know what happened.

  23. if we dig this issue deeper, we realized that the true causes of all violence has never been about religions.. its always been about human greediness and selfishness themselves.e.g what happened in Gaza and countries around it.. they were attacked fiercely by the israel and US military, WHY?? imagine when muslim country take full control of their oil resources, the oil price will be controlled by muslim and this is fearsome by the israel US and britain, giant oil company such as Shell will be affected which eventually affected Queen's Elizabeth britain's revenue. and what happened in Indonesia, can u find a logical relation between killing, raping chinese and unsatisfaction of their president re-election??? THERE ARE NO LOGICAL relation!!! Its simply bcoz of their undeveloped brain which only think of their own desire. Its obvious that the Chinese in Indonesia are much more prettier than the local lady.. I am a muslin and i NEVER heard muslim are asked to rape non-muslim women!!!! that is absurd!! thinking they rape innocent and adorable chinese girl and mention it is bcoz of god, %#$@#$@$ F**K U Retarded Indonesians!!!!!

  24. i still remember those time...i was 10,,
    the fear-the scream-the panic,,

although until now this country keep on speak about "sameness between all races",
    that's only a nonsense!
    once they got chance again-
i'm sure they'll slay us AGAIN,,

this moment (anti-china) not only happened at 98',my father also ever told me this was happened about 70' in borneo/kalimantan,,,

    NO ONE been caught!
for the blood has slain-for the soul killed,,
they think like we are as an animal that has no price to be judged for

they STILL hate us (chinese) until now coz they think we colonize them,, only because most of chinese here more success than them (funny-- there are also few chinese here live ordinary, but we never blame people-don't we?)

see someone above me comment try to "think wise"?
    that's only bull,,,
they talk and try to act like a holy people--but the truth that they keep living like animals...

see how their people finally fights one each other between themself,,
    that's makes me wanna laught,,

  25. Sorry, but i felt obliged to comment.

I'm a westerner or, BULE as you guys like to call me. I have been living and working in Indonesia for about 3 years.

I have a Chinese girlfriend whom has explained in detail all about these brutal riots which took place here in Indonesia in 1998. It really pains and saddens me, honestly I cant even begin to express how much.

Actually before I met my lovely girlfriend I had absolutely no idea that such incidents had taken place. I come from Northern Ireland and I'm sure you know it has had its own troubles in the past, which are pale in comparison to these racist attacks.

After living here for 3 years. I do admit that Indonesia is a lovely country, but my eyes have been opened wide. In my honest opinion he "vast majority" of prebumi are complete animals with the mentality of, ermm, I don't even know how u could describe them, if i said animals that would be a huge insult to animals, a term which my father used to say springs to mind "chicken shit for brains" gk punya otak!

A final point I'd like to add, is the fact that Indonesia has to be one of the most racist countries I have ever had the pleasure of visiting or living in. Hence the fact that I openly and to my face get called "BULE" on a daily basis, and my girlfriend called "CINA" these comments are both mean and downright racist. So, evidently to this day 16/05/2011 racism is still being actively perpetuated. And I couldn't imagine the mentality of these animals ever changing.

Thank the good lord above that my contract ends here in a few months and my girlfriend and I can leave. I wouldn't even consider raising children in such a country.

May God Bless and take care of all "worthy" people.
